Growing up

A common complaint:- How time flies.

My little cousin- the first preemie baby I ever saw- isn't so little anymore. He will be in Class 10.

My niece turns five this year. Scary! I can still remember quite distinctly the day she was born, braving through flooded Madras to reach the hospital from work, adding to the floodwaters with my tears (my Dad told me 2 hours after she was born, and I was not happy to be the last to know of her descent onto Earth). Remember her as a baby who used to wait for me to get home in the evening. Now she goes to school and has become one of those many kids that can't keep shut and stay still for too long. Soon, she will be a cranky teenager, and have boyfriends (or not), write Board exams , agonize over tutions, electives and hormones.

Yet another baby that was born last year turns one on Friday. This little imp, born to a lady who is my pillar of rationality , is now at that stage when baby talk has begun and is the nicest thing to hear on the other end of an ISD call. And yet another baby, now turns 3 months old and has already upstaged my niece in occupying prime real estate on my laptop.

Little babies grow up, grow tall and become busy with their lives. Those of us who saw them as babies remain wedded to the idea of them as little cherubs. (I wonder if that's how my sister remembers me. Or my parents. Is that why it is hard for them to let go of us completely?)

In the growth of babies, we see ourselves age.So summing up, scary!

birth and death. it's a cycle. reproduction. evolution. continuance.

It aint about death,Archer. Its about the longish process that leads to it, the time that you witness silently or actively, reproduction and procreation.

What is strange is that one isn't reminded of growing up by witnessing any significant changes in oneself, but we notice it so easily while looking at growing babies, malls that weren't there last year, batchmates getting married, etc.
